A truly fascinating read: a guide to Moonkin as tank. Not just for under-level instances, but L70, heroics and Karazhan!

That is interesting. There's a couple things that make me hesitate about this build.

One, it requires very specific itemization and two, it requires a cooperative party/raid. I mean if everything went smoothly I wouldn't need to use taunt in a raid right? I still do though....

Still if they made a non tauren race a druid I might give it a try.

The lack of taunt is indeed scary. While taunt is largely moot on raid bosses, it's nice to know that on trash, if someone pulls aggro, it won't mean a mob running amuck in the camp. Frankly, though, that's not my biggest problem with this idea.

In my mind, if you're generating rage primarily with Wrath, and your Wrath has a 70% chance of avoiding "knockback", you're still depending on luck for it to go smoothly. I would prefer not to take that chance and feel that you need to pair them with a paladin with concentration to feel comfortable with this set-up. Granted, you can't be knocked back further than 0, the cast is incredibly short and the knockbacks get smaller and smaller with each hit. However, any additional randomness that would jeopardize your baseline threat generation, especially with a tank that can't taunt in any way, shape or form, is daunting to me.

I'm not familiar with druid shifting but would it be possible to shift to bear to make a taunt and then shift back to moonkin?

I don't see why not... I shift quite swiftly between Taruen and cat/bear.

Though I do not have specific experience with time between moonkin and bear.

The biggest problem would be time...

Moonkin
Out of Moonkin to Tuaren
Tauren to Bear
Bear Taunt
Out of Bear to Taruen
Tauren to Moonkin

I know there's something in one of the trees to cut down the time neded for shift... but this is what I would anticipate given form changes as I know them now.

In theory, yes, but you have to pass through cow form both ways. Dropping form doesn't take a GCD but shifting into anything does. In practice, though, it takes longer because of lag. Of course, with stunnable mobs you can Bash and shift to Moonkin... and if nothing's hitting you when you lose aggro, you can switch to caster to bear without being in any danger.

It sounds workable but touchy, seems like the bottom line.

Concentration Aura makes Wrath un-push-backable. And you get the armor. Etc., etc. But you still don't have the kinds of tools at your instant disposal that a bear does. Nor the extra HP which, frankly, is a big deal.

I know its possible to switch back and forth as a druid - and I could see it working alright.

Considering how much agro spell damage [ and healing ] can generate, I don
t think a taunt would be quite as necessary as people think.

IIRC, a moonkin can _almost_ match the damage of a frost mage, and I know I have no problems getting agro without a taunt. Very Happy

Also, way back when, I ued to be part of a group of guilds that would do MC twice a week. Druids were tanking on some of the encounters [ usualy the five core hounds ] over fury warriors, and these weren't even always feral druids. Of course, this was also before moonkin form, again iirc.
